The Decades of Décor

Do you have a specific style when it comes to home design and décor?  Do you like to change with the current styles or always stick with one style? How do you choose what items you decorate your home with today?  Do you choose by certain colors, what you’ve seen someone else use or do you like to be unique?  Staying on-trend can be a challenge in our busy and stylish world today!  It’s interesting to stop and take note of how trends continue to recycle.  I love to look at home décor and think about where its style originated!  Take a look at some of the fun kitchens, living rooms and dining rooms from the 1950s, 60s, 70s and compare them to today.  It might surprise you how similar our style over the years really is, even as we giggle at what it used to be.

Head-to-toe tile in different shapes and sizes, flat paneled cabinets and open upper shelving.  I’d say the 1950s definitely still influences today’s style and kitchen design!  We might be hard-pressed to find a Singer sewing machine in a kitchen today though.

The 60s were full of new design approaches with low, straight lines, natural woods and earthtones.  In come the welcoming sectional sofas that encourage conversation and chilling.  The only difference in today’s 1960s influenced living room is you probably won’t find an ashtray on the coffee table.

This one hit home for me and I guess that’s because this would be the beginning of my memories of what home looked like in the 70s.  Check out the groovy wood paneling, olive green florals and candelabra!  While the wood paneling is a little different these days, and we don’t see many chrome table legs, the similar design elements are striking.  Signs of the 1970s certainly have their place in today’s décor and design, and I love it!

What is your favorite decade?  Is there a design era that makes you feel happy and you wish you could step back to that time?  Or, are you happy we’ve evolved into what today’s décor looks like and never want to see a shag carpet in your lifetime?  I hope you enjoyed this quick read as much as I enjoyed looking back at the decades of design.  While I walk through houses as a real estate agent, and gravitate to some décor more than others, it’s always exciting to see the historic influences on modern design today.
