Experiencing Joy & Excitement Once Again

The Holidays bring so many emotions for people of all ages.  We all know that children carry such overwhelming excitement and anticipation of what’s to come during October - December.  While adults often have a commingling of feelings which poses an opportunity for feeling stress when they just want to experience joy and excitement like the youngsters.  When does the shift occur?  When do we transfer from excitement and joy to anxiety and stress?  When do the expectations and responsibilities creep in during the holidays?  Can we curb that shift by intentionally creating boundaries?  Perhaps, while we listen to nostalgic tunes, light the candles or trim the tree, we should also accept the reality of the busyness that comes with the season.  By proactively creating boundaries for ourselves, we might possibly remove some of the unnecessary stress and allow the simplicity of joy and anticipation to flood right back into our holidays.

Reframing the way the holiday traditions and expectations flow can allow you to truly experience the joy and excitement you once had as a child.  So, what are practical tips for handling the “golden quarter” or the “Christmas Creep?” *Some silly quips used around the world*  While it might not be foolproof, it is my Christmas Wish to help start you down your own path of feeling like a child again during this holiday season!

#1 Be Forgiving, toward yourself and others!  Oftentimes we forget to consider that we don’t know what someone else is up against or walking through.  When someone irritates you or treats you in an unkind way, simply forgive them and move on.  We also set expectations for ourselves and then beat ourselves up for not making the mark.  ‘Tis the season to forgive and try to forget!

#2 Take a Break, from to-do lists and expectations!  Many of us are guilty of focusing so much on all the things we “have to” do that we miss out on the potential for experiencing the joys of the season.  Keep in mind the old saying, “the reason for the season” and remember why we make this time of year a big deal in the first place.  Whether you approach the season from a religious perspective or simply enjoy the festivities for celebrating with family and friends, most of us seem to experience some level of hustle and bustle this time of year.  Give yourself a break!

#3 Slim down, literally and figuratively!  Make it a point to get some fresh air and get your blood pumping.  You’ll be sure to relax your mind and your body by giving it a little Vitamin D and peace of mind when stepping away from the chaos and into nature.  Another recommendation is to slim down your activities.  If you’re anything like me, it’s a challenge to let some of the sweet holiday traditions go to make room for something new.  So, I find myself cramming all the things we’ve done in the past and spoiling the integrity each activity had when it began.  I think Elsa made a great point when she sang, “Let it Go, Let it Go!”

As I wrap up my thoughts during this special time of year, I want to wish everyone who took the time to read this blog, a very joyful and relaxing holiday season. Cheers!
